Social media & video protection

How to remove copied videos from social media

Collect the direct URL of each unauthorised upload, identify the original work and confirm the rights you represent. Use that platform's copyright reporting process. Review licences and applicable exceptions first, then track the outcome and any subsequent re-uploads.

What to prepare before requesting removal

  • Original film, episode or video and a reference that identifies the protected work.
  • Direct upload URLs, account handles and relevant copied segments or timestamps.
  • Ownership or representation details, including territorial and licensing limits.
  • Whether the desired outcome is removal, tracking or eligible monetisation.

Check the use before reporting it

An upload can be an unlicensed full episode, an authorised promotion, a review or a licensed partner's post. The presence of your footage alone does not settle which category applies. Check ownership, permission and relevant copyright exceptions.

Keep those decisions in the record, especially where several distributors or partners manage the same catalogue. A rights or licence check before reporting can prevent action against an approved campaign.

Report the specific upload

YouTube allows copyright owners and authorised representatives to submit removal requests. Its process requires identification of the work and direct links to the reported content. Consider copyright exceptions and read the information-sharing terms before submitting.

On other social platforms, use their current intellectual-property reporting route. Include the particular post or video URL, not just the profile homepage. Copyright, trademark and impersonation complaints address different problems; use the route supported by your evidence.

Plan for re-uploads and rights decisions

YouTube offers a prevent-copies option for eligible removal requests submitted through Studio. This is a platform-specific tool, not a promise to stop every copy across the internet. Content ID claims and copyright removal requests are also different processes.

Record whether each finding should be removed, tracked or considered for eligible monetisation. Keep account, upload and work identifiers together so later copies can be linked to the existing case rather than reviewed from scratch.

How Cyber Theft Watch helps

Cyber Theft Watch connects social-video discovery with evidence review, reporting and repeat-upload monitoring. For eligible rights holders, we can also support rights management and monetisation decisions.

Send your reference work, reported upload URLs and authority to act. We can start triage and onboarding the same day once the required information is available. Each platform makes its own decision and controls the review time.
